drafts to my music magazine

this is my first draft and idea of how i see my music magazine
it photographed a female in the middle of the page. The female will have her hair down showing 'swag' and she will be surrounded by coverlines.

this is my second draft with a 'vybz' masthead. this shows the kind of vibe the magazine brings to its audience. it consists of three artists. the male in the middles is topless with masculine muscles and also a female next to him to balance the kind of audience it attracts.
my third draft consists of two masculine, topless artists. i came up with a new masthead to bring a new meaning to my music magazine. it will consist of high lighting and coverlines written in different colours from the main coverline.
my fourth draft consists of a different masthead and three different images of different artist. the main image is placed in the middle of the magazine and the two other images placed on each shoulder, showing the hierarchy between artists. the coverlines and dateline are placed below the two images leaving the main coverline at the top next to the masthead.
the fifth draft i came up with consist of an artist in the middle of the magazine in a medium long shot showing the artist raising both hands in the air. it include a selling line at the bottom of the masthead to show a relationship between my music magazine and the audience it targets.
the sixth draft i came up with allows my coverlines to be at the bottom of the page because the main image is a medium long shot placed at the top of the magazine. the artist is to catch the audience eye at the first glance. it consist of a female artist posing in a super hero position to connote the kind of topics the magazine brings in the music industry.
my second to last idea brings the idea of ethnicity in my music magazine. a black artist in the middle wearing jewellery showing wealth and where black people stand in the music industry. i included puff and coverlines at the side of it making him seem more important.
my last draft consist of three boxes of different images and not having a main image. this is to show the equality between the artist and the main coverline is written at the bottom left corner, allowing the audience to see it first if its been placed in a shop and giving information about the three artists. it comes with a puff and selling line.

profiling my audience

My music magazine reader: Jermaine is in his late teenage years age 18 and has a passion and drive for music. Has a young man he had attempted to record music tracks of his own and put them on YouTube for friends and other music fans to view and get feedback. Jermaine is inspired by R&B/Hip-Hop music and his pursuing his dream of an artist by devoted half of his college money as a student to buy albums of coming up artist and artist that already made it. Jermaine is an A level student studying media, dance and performance, business and art. He also has a collection of mix tapes and has attended many music concerts with his friends. His friends know how to socialise with him as Jermaine will only be friends with you if you have rhythm and same interests as him. There have been occasions where Jermaine invites his friends over to his parent’s house and has given them a performance of his own. As a teenager he is also interested in playing his playstation saving some money for the latest call of duty game, computer as one of his crucial ways of socialising with his friends, going cinema with friends to watch the latest films, very active in college by taking part in sports and making the college football team and always up late to watch TV.

My music magazine will be designed in the interest of Jermaine as my music magazine will involve a female artist in the front cover as the main image and cover lines will be based around the lives of artists and how they became who they are now. There will be bonuses and gifts relating to gaming, computer, films and sports which will target my music audience such as Jermaine. I have designed my music magazine with a sexy photograph of an artist as my main image which attracts my target audience as most of them buy magazines because of who is in the front cover and the quality and posture of the picture.

Scratch magazine - Analysis

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of two men, one looking directly at the camera and the other looking at the DJ set. Both photographs are medium long shot showing there head, arms and waist.  The main image is a man standing up with a microphone in his hands and thumb pointing at himself. The second image is a man slouching low playing the DJ set. The background of the photograph is dark green and the main image covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the main image is the SCRATCH masthead, and in front of him are seven cover lines along with two cover lines at the right side of him. The photographed men’s name is in white and blue and there are different colour cover lines to separate them. A bar code is visible in the bottom left hand corner.

Masthead:
SCRATCH masthead is very distinctive: yellow with black outline and black drop shadow. The font used is a sans serif font, and all the letters are in upper case letters. The font is very simple plus with a meaning. The word ‘SCRATCH’ comes from a phrase disk jockeys users or supermarkets use all the time. ‘Scratch card’, giving a suggestion of ownership and money based. This could mean that this magazine are making lots of money through the years and are rewarding the audience with maybe points that could be converted into money. All of the DJ’s who have used this phrase in their occupation had a reputation of having good income from what they do. The name ‘SCRACTH’ tells the audience this magazine is music based.

Character:
The cover photograph is of the successful American rapper ‘Lil Wayne’ and ‘DJ Khaled’, who is a successful producer and a DJ.

Composition:
the man in the main image is posed like he just finished a concert with microphone on his hand and pointing at himself with the same hand using his thumb while the other man in the second image is posed like he is performing for a big crowd, two of his hands on the DJ set and in a melody posture.

Costume:
The main in the main photograph is wearing an era hat, t-shirt with writings on it on the inside of his black jacket zipped up half way and blue jeans with a visible chain hanging down low from the jeans. He wore this costume in his video shoot of ‘I wanna rock’. The other man is wearing a full costume of a blue tracksuit, shades on his eyes, chain handing down low from his neck, bracelet and a watch around both of his hands. Their costume has been chosen carefully to appeal to their audience which is mainly male.

 NVC:
The main image has his thumb pointing at him and his face almost close to being a straight face but he glared it suggesting its all about him. The other image posed his body rhythmically suggesting dancing to a piece of music.

Lighting:
The lighting is low key, as the photograph is meant to display evening time.

Setting:
There is a little setting however the dark green background connotes nature meaning the photographed people are naturally born to take up what their doing as occupation.

Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relates to their photograph says: “LIL WAYNE DJ KHALED SIMPLE THE BEST”. This is making a reference to a piece of music they put together and took the world by storm. This music and video to accompany it was controversial because it featured both of them wearing similar costumes as to the ones on the cover page. This was the video Lil Wayne showed the rock star side of him and balanced it with the gangster American image his been known for. ‘I wanna rock’, has millions of views on YouTube and making hits on both American and English TV. The different cover-lines tells us that this magazine doesn’t concentrate on just one genre of music, and doesn’t only focus on music either, but is diverse in what it chooses to write about. Artist mentioned on the cover-lines include Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Snoop Dogg, UGK, The Fixxers, T-pain, Akon, Mannie Fresh, Marley Marl and Swizz Beatz (there is a definite emphasis on American artists). The way the cover-lines are written reveals that this magazine also focuses on current news events as well- e.g. “Dipset wants your beats!” All of the cover lines use a sans-serif font, connoting modern tradition. It suggests that SCRATCH magazine has been of existence over a long period of time and it’s always keeping up to date and has almost become an American institution. This can tell its readers they will receive accurate and entertaining journalism.

Target Audience:
Considering all of these points, the likely target audience would be people (male and female, though more male audience members than female) aged 20-40. They would have a good knowledge of popular culture and a definite interest in a wide range of musical styles and the music industry generally. Minority of them are likely to be uneducated but have a good understanding about the latest news in the music industry, and have an interest in American musical styles and production.

Blender - Fergie

Denotation:
The magazine consists of a colour photograph of a woman looking directly at the camera. It is a medium long shot showing her head, arms and waist. She is standing up in a posture and chest and belly is visible in the shot. The background of the photograph is white, and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the woman is the BLENDER masthead, and in front of her are five separate cover-lines in blue and black. The photographed woman’s name is in blue and there are dashes between each cover-line separating them. There is no bar code visible in the front cover.

Masthead:
BLENDER’S masthead is very distinctive: gold writing in capital letters and a slice of line going across from the right to the left. The font used is a sans serif font, and all the letters are all in upper case letters. The font used is famously used for simple meanings but the slice of line going across connotes that BLENDER magazine can be filled with dangerous excitements. The word ‘BLENDER’ comes from a domestic machine found in the kitchen of our homes to shred ingredients together, suggesting that this magazine has a collection of different types of music and compresses them into one magazine. All of the musicians who have used this word in their lyrics have a reputation of having their own style as well as taking up other styles to make them who they are.

Character:
The cover photograph is of the successful American singer-songwriter , actress and fashion designer ‘Stacy Ann Ferguson’ better known as ‘Fergie’.

Composition:
She is posed in a very sexy kind of way. Her cloth, body language, and clothing, are very sexually suggestive and provocative.

Costume:
Her clothing is a grey jumper with a zip, a bra, and black trousers or shorts(not fully visible). This costume has been chosen carefully to appeal to the target audience of the magazine, who are most likely to be male. The clothing worn is similar to the costume she had used in a video shoot she did with her band ‘The Black Eyed Peas’, which was formed in Los Angeles in 1995. The zip of the jumper exposing her chest and stomach and bra completes the look.

Nvc:
Her non verbal communication is also very seductive. Her hair if blowing backwards with the fan in the studio that’s not visible in the magazine and her hands placed on her jacket that’s been opened apart  opened apart, as well as her mouth opening her white teeth and she is looking directly at the camera.

Lighting:
The lighting is high key, as the photograph is meant to display daytime.

Setting:
There is a little setting, however the white background connotes the photographer being a good girl and is linked with the cover line ‘Fergie: HOW A BAD GIRL MADE GOOD’.

Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relate to her says ‘Fergie: HOW A BAD GIRL MADE GOOD’. This is making a reference to a piece of music she did before this picture was taken, that was called ‘London Bridge’. This music and video to accompany it was controversial because it featured her and her dancers wearing revealing clothing and suggestive dancing. This was the video where she made the world know what she’s like as a lady and her image become more adult and sexy. ‘HOW A BAD GIRL MAD GOOD’ reference relates to the fact that Fergie had settle down with a partner and now planning on a family. The different cover lines tells us that this magazine doesn’t concentrate on just one genre of music, and doesn’t only focus on one music either, but is diverse in what it chooses to write about. Artists mentioned on the cover lines include Britney spears, Rihanna, Feist, MIA, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen (there is a definite emphasis on American artists). The way the cover-lines are written reveals that this magazine also focuses on current news events ‘20 essential CDs… of 2008’. All of the cover-lines use a sans serif font, connoting modern tradition. It suggests ‘BLENDER’ magazine is very modern even though it has been of existence over a long period of time. This can tell readers they receive accurate and entertaining journalism.

Target audience:
Considering all of these points, the likely target audience would be people (male and female, though more male audience member than female) aged 21-50. They would have a good knowledge of popular culture and a possibility of interest in a wide range of musical styles and the music industry generally. They are likely to be well educated/well read, and have an interest in American popular music.

Vibe magazine - Usher

Denotation:
The magazine consists of a man looking directly at the camera although we can’t see his eyes because of his shades. It is a medium close up showing his head, shoulders up to his chest pocket. He could have been standing or sitting down while posing at d camera with his index finger up showing the jewellery on his index finger and wrist as well as the tattoo on the surface of his hand. Behind the man’s head is the vibe masthead and in front of him are 10 cover lines in various colours such as black, blue, yellow, red, and white. The photographed mans name is written in bold, and a bigger font and a bar code is visible in the bottom left corner.
Masthead:
Vibes masthead has a very distinctive colour blue with the biggest font. The font used is a serif font and after the first letter the lower case letters came in place. The font used in plain and smooth which connotes the artist music of the front cover. The word vibe comes from the feeling or mood your when listening or hearing a particular type of music. The vibe also relates to the kind of attitude artist in the magazine has and the kind of tension they create to the audience this connote the kind of music and genre the magazine is into. Many people are now using the word vibe to describe their feeling, this could have been because of the reputation this magazine had built for itself. The name vibe tells the audience this magazine is music based. The website has been giving at the right hand corner of the magazine for readers that want to find out more information.
Character:
The cover photograph is of the successful American dancer, singer, song-writer, entrepreneur and actor ‘Usher Terry Raymond’, stage name ‘usher’.
Composition:
He is posed in a lean back position with his index finger raised up to show the ring on his finger suggesting he is already taken by another woman and an almost straight looking face to show a sign of seriousness and to look cool.
Costume: his clothing is a leather army looking jacket with a zip on his right breast pocket, his wearing the jacket while its opened up to show the white shirt his wearing underneath. The black shades, wristwatch and the ring his wearing completes his outfit as a R&B singer. His costume was choosing carefully to indicate the kind of music he promotes and the lifestyle his living. The ring symbolises his relationship with a partner and him rising up his index finger shows his responsibility as a married man and how proud he is.
NVC:  His non verbal communication applies a sign of seriousness in him. His face looking sharp and not smiling and his index finger rose up almost looking like a middle finger as to say ‘back off’.
Lighting: the lighting is medium key as the photograph is meant to display evening times.
Setting: there is a little setting because of the shot the photograph is taking in, however the blurry background connotes the artist putting everything else behind him and putting his career and marriage in front of him.
Cover lines: the main cover line that relates to his photograph says “usher… the king is back he’s no.1 and married with a vengeance”. This makes reference to all the no.1 hits usher had in his music career and the exaggeration of him being the king shows his importance in the music world and what you can compare his work rate to. Another cover line that says ‘ultimate sex survey: starring 50 cent Nelly Webbie Trina D.Woods and you’. Shows that vibe magazine is into different genres of music with the names of big artist. ‘Keri Hilson strips down’. This cover line would allow the audience to believe that there will be a picture of Keri Hilson stripping down in the magazine, whereas it’s just a figurative meaning of her letting out the things she’s been hiding behind close doors. There’s also a distinctive cover line written at the top of the magazine in black and yellow writing over the top. It gives information about boy bands for audience that may find interest in them and wrote about what Christ Stockes said to YouTube allegations in the magazine.
Target audience: considering all these points, the likely target audience would be people (male and female, though more female members than male) aged 25-45. They are likely to have experience of marriages and good knowledge of popular culture and a definite interest in a wide rage of musical styles and the musical industry generally. They are likely to be well educated/ well read, and have interest in American popular culture.

XXL magazine - Rick Ross

Denotation:
This magazine consists of a coloured photograph of a man looking directly at an object on the scene. It is a close up shot showing his head facing sideways at the camera. This music and video to accompany it was controversial because it featured him wearing name brand clothing and suggestive lyrics.
